Thanksgiving Feast!

My family and I just got home from volunteering at the annual Thanksgiving dinner on Hilton Head Island. The meal was free, hosted by St.Andrews By The Sea, and served at Hudson's On The Docks. We had a great time participating together as a family at this Thanksgiving event, and feel so blessed. I hope that everyone has a safe and blessed holiday as well!

Hilton Head Tides

Hilton Head Island and the surrounding areas see some of the biggest tide changes on the Eastern Seaboard. It averages about 7 feet of change between high and low tide, and can at times see a 8 to 12 foot difference.
Here, a picture of a sunken boat on Hilton Head's Intracoastal waterway. One picture taken in the spring at low tide. The other picture taken today near high tide.

Irene

Hurricane Irene treated us well on Hilton Head Island. Some surf, some rain, and a beautiful sunset. Praying our neighbors up north fare as well.

It's Great Being Local!

My family and I have some long-time friends visiting us from out-of-town.  Their children had never seen the Atlantic Ocean.  They have been all over the world, and visited beaches in many different countries, but never the East Coast in the U.S.  So, we all packed up our things for a day at the beach on Hilton Head Island; coolers with food and water, beach towels, sand buckets and toys, beach umbrella, boogie boards, skimboards (my daughter and I like to ride the waves), and, of course, sunscreen.  Now comes the good part - we asked our friends whether they would like to visit one of our beaches near shopping and all amenities (and crowded with tourists), or whether they would rather go to a often-overlooked out-of-the-way beach with less crowds.  To my family's delight, they chose the latter.  So, off we went to this little spot we know about that is like our own slice of paradise.  It is always relatively crowd-free, and we had a marvelous time at the coast on a beautiful, sun-shining day on Hilton Head, SC.  We played, we ate, the kids splashed, and we all came back a little redder, but much happier and relaxed after a day well spent at our favorite beach.  It's great being local! Oh, and the kids all slept well after playing so hard. :)
P.S. - To all my skimboarding buddies out there: the waves are best at, or just after, high tide.

Clear and sunny!

It's a hot day down on Hilton Head, but it's also beautiful out! The air is clear (no smoke from neighboring states), the marsh grass is green, and the sun is shining. All-in-all, it's perfect vacation weather! Wouldn't you just love to be here year-round?

The Broad River

The Broad River Bridge in Beaufort County, SC, is approximately 1.5 miles long.  The Broad River effectively divides the county into two sections, with the town of Beaufort lying "North of the Broad," and Hilton Head Island being "South of the Broad." The Broad River bridge can be seen in the distance, across the marsh, in the photo.

Sailing Around Hilton Head Island

If you are on the Hilton Head Island on Friday, May 20th, look for the sailboats on a trip around our island.  The Hilton Head Plantation Yacht Club has invited South Carolina Yacht Club to join them in a sail around Hilton Head.  They plan to begin around 9:30/10:00 a.m., and the journey should last about 6-7 hours.  It should be a pretty sight to see those sails making their way around the island!

Had lunch today in Savannah. Did you know that Savannah is only 30 to 45 minutes from Hilton Head? It's a great place to visit for the day before escaping back to the quiet tranquil of the Hilton Head Island beaches. :)
